Happy New Year!
Well, it's a week old, already. As a sort of late Christmas present to myself, I ordered a bunch of art books online. The first batch arrived today. It includes:
-Beginner's Guide to Digital Painting in Photoshop (3dtotal Publishing)
-Heroes & Heroines - Japanese Video Game and Animation Illustration (PIE International)
-Pixiv Almanac Volume 1 (Udon)
-Persona 4 Official Design Works (Udon)
Probably could've done without Persona 4, but I'll try to suck it dry of as much inspiration as possible.
These days I find myself doodling on my 3DS and Wii U, rather than actually drawing in a sketchbook or on the computer. That's probably a bad thing. For anyone interested, however:
Miiverse: EddieU
3DS Friend Code: 1246-9455-3013
I try to add new doodles on Miiverse as often as possible, and I've just started sending out fun sketches via SwapNote on the Nintendo 3DS. It's a fun little way to communicate.
The Pixiv book I ordered is really cool. There's so much good stuff in there. I actually have a page on the actual Pixiv website, and I've begun to get some views on my artwork there. The site is a bit difficult to navigate, though, at least for someone as foggy-headed as myself. I've found some good stuff on there just by browsing, but the Almanac is full of stuff I've never seen before. Could be because it's actually the 2010 collection from Japan (I think, based on a comment from one of the artists in there, talking about this collection). In any case, I feel I can recommend the purchase. I got my copy on Overstock.com for about $30, which is a pretty good price.
Heroes & Heroines is also a great collection. In some ways it's almost like "Oh, I wish I had more from that artist," but it's a good selection of different design art, which can probably serve as a launching point for investigating specific artists in more detail. One appearance in there is from Huke (Black Rock Shooter, Stein's Gate), and I was like "Bah, I already have this stuff" (I got Huke's BLK art book some months back). Speaking of which, I literally just had the idea of doing reviews of art books. That would be kind of cool, right? If only I could wrap my head around some video editing software, that's something I might like to pursue. Anyone interested?
Alright, fried chicken is calling. I have a lot of ideas for new art brewing in my head. Keep an eye on EDsketch
