Raven Skull

So... I designed a head that's going to be sculpted to become a toy! ... or at least, PART of a toy.

Part 2:

After the Bone Wings stretch goal was added, I kept thinking it would be really cool to design a skull to go with them. Back when the Raven design won the last Fantastic Exclusive voting tournament, a skull head was a no-brainer that was discussed by the fans. The toy's head pops onto a ball joint, though, so a skinny spine/neck wouldn't be enough to attach the skull head to the action figure body. So I drew this up, adding some of my typical organic detailing to bulk out the neck, and I brought the design in to the Four Horsemen studio. Before I had a chance to suggest including a skull with the wings, the 4H had already decided to do that very thing. I showed them the design, not really thinking they'd go in that direction... but as it turns out, the head will be based on this artwork.

As with the bone wings, there'll be some changes to the design. I based my drawing heavily on an actual raven skull, and I got a little crazy with the size of the beak. Eric Treadaway of the Four Horsmen has already done a rough sculpt of the head, and you can see how he redesigned the skull shapes and proportions. I like his changes a lot, and I'm happy to see he's blocked in all the organic shapes on the neck that I designed. I'll try to get photos of the sculpting process if I can... and hopefully I can convince the 4H to let me press a little detail into the actual sculpt. Here's hoping!
