Description

It's been suggested that I talk a bit more about my... *inspiration* for these sketches I've been doing. The thing is, it doesn't work like that. For the most part, this series is is just moment-to-moment drawing. Actually, it's a balance between drawing and "marking." What I mean by that is that most of what you see here aren't really lines at all. They're more like blobs. Get close enough to the paper and you can actually see the wet ink sitting there.

Anyway, regarding this image specifically, I started it days ago and lost interest. I don't know what I intended originally, but that "nose" bothered me enough to stop drawing for days. I just picked up the sketchbook again about 20 minutes ago and wrapped up the image by inking in the tentacle-appendages.

The only thing I really thought about while drawing this that was RELATED to the drawing was... well, basically I was beating myself up for forgetting certain techniques and thoughts that SHOULD be kept in mind when doing this sort of thing. I think I got a little bit of the technique back by the end, but I laid a lot of marks down too heavily. Just too much ink, so the lines aren't as fancy as I might like in certain areas. Oh well. I also messed up the balance between heavily- and lightly-detailed areas, as well as line weight on the inside and outside of the drawing. So in a lot of ways this is an imperfect piece of artwork. Still, there's a lot of stuff I enjoy within the drawing. Maybe some of it only I can appreciate, because I hold the memories of the action of putting those marks down on the paper.

Inspiration? No. There is, however, a wide range of thought and emotion going on during the drawing process that must somehow affect the end product. Take that for whatever it's worth (and don't expect too many more in-depth descriptions like this, lest I talk in even more circles).
